Man transforms abandoned shed into fantastic log cabin

And with a budget of only $100!

Sixty-five-year-old Richard Aiken managed to turn an abandoned shed into a very special log cabin. His dream was to have a home in the middle of nature where he could withdraw from his hectic life. Richard found his oasis in a completely dilapidated shed, a shed that many people would disregard. But Richard saw only great potential.

The result is incredible!

Second home

Buying a second home is something many people dream about. The same goes for Richard Aiken. A second home would be too costly, so he looked for something as cheap as possible. The American found everything he was searching for in a ramshackle shed, and it only set him back $100 (around 90 euros).

Derelict barn

Richard’s new purchase was full of debris and the roof had completely collapsed. The outside looked terrible, but the inside, abandoned and horribly neglected, looked plain dangerous. Yet Richard decided that he wanted to spend his free time renovating the old cabin. An inspection revealed that the shed consisted mainly of rotten wood, leaving him one choice: demolish most of the shed and rebuild it from scratch.

Reuse

Looking at the home would cast doubt on whether or not any materials could be salvaged, but Richard was passionate about putting as much of the old home as he could into the new home. Richard hired his family to help him with this huge job. And it didn’t take long before they also discovered a natural spring nearby, which meant they could install their own water supply for the home.

Original construction

Richard wanted to “stay true to the soul of the original construction,” but that turned out to be difficult. During excavation, rock was discovered about two meters below the ground. That meant they had to build the cabin a few meters above the ground. They poured concrete to make a basement, and Richard sourced materials from the trees on his property.

Materials from the environment

They used white oak to make new floor beams, and a rustic porch brought the whole vision together. By using locally sourced wood, Richard was able to meld his house with the beautiful surroundings—this made the project look very special. The new log cabin also had a second floor. He used a fallen oak to make a beautiful staircase.

Log cabin

Because the family invested a lot of time and care into building the log cabin, the end result is sure to be spectacular! Together, the family enjoys it when they can. Wondering what the log cabin will look like? Watch the video below for a sneak peek:
